Old Man Lewis
The dog who started it all! Lewis was a 12yr old rottweiler that I pulled out of the shelter back in early July when I went to assess Auburn, another dog, for potential to come to the pit bull rescue of mine. I saw him (Lewis) laying in his kennel with a hopeless look on his face like "yes, this is it. This is the end" I could not leave this old fella in the shelter to die. I knew with him being older dog and having hip dysplasia he would most certainly never make it out of the shelter. I brought him home with me to live out the rest of his years in my family. We did PRP work on his hips that helped him move wonderfully! He was able to chase after the other dogs, get up and down the stairs, and follow me around nudging me with his cold wet nose wanting love. He was the sweetest dog anyone could ask for. Then the cancer came on, fast.. It started on his spine, it affected his back legs where sometimes he couldn't walk. It then quickly spread through his body and he was in pain. I had to make the painful decision to let him go and release him from the pain. He tried to stay strong. When his mommy came home he would use all his might to stand up, walk over and nudge me with that cold wet nose. He would whimper with excitement and wag his nub. My husband was jealous and said " I never get that celebration when I come home" But we figured its because Lewis knew that I saved him. He was grateful and he spent every moment of our time together thanking me with love and affection. I held him in my arms this morning and all this reflected through my mind. Lewis has touched my heart tremendously, he was in my life for 2 months and it felt like I had known him since he was a pup. So please, anytime you think about getting another dog, please go visit your local rescue or shelter. Save a life. You get so much in return and they will definitely leave a paw print on your heart. - Amanda Moncrief
